Indian Anjuman e-Haideri Offers to Pay Sheikh Zakzaky’s Medical Bills

India’s Shiite organisation Anjuman e-Haideri has offered to bear the full costs of the medical treatment of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and his wife Zeenat while they are in their country.

On Monday, Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife arrived in the Indian city of New Delhi and were received by doctors who will treat them for ailments they contracted while in detention in Nigeria. Sheikh Zakzaky, who was taken into detention in Nigeria in December 2015, recently won a court ruling in which he was allowed to go to India for medical treatment.
Following his incarceration, he has suffered several mild strokes and is reported to have lost sight in one of his eyes. However, following the clamour for their release after the court ruling, the Nigerian government had to succumb and yesterday, the sheikh and his wife were admitted into Medanta Hospital, New Delhi, where they will be treated.
Bahadur Naqvi, the general secretary of Anjuman e-Haideri, has subsequently written to Dr Naresh Trehan, the managing director and chief surgeon of Medanta Hospital, offering to foot all the medical costs incurred by  Sheikh Zakzakys in India. Sheikh Zakzaky, 66, suffers from Ischaemic heart disease, chronic hypertension, right eye severe visual impairment with progressive open glaucoma, mental toxicity and lead poisoning, among other illnesses.
Mr Naqvi’s letter read: “Maulana Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky, who is a prominent Shi’a Muslim leader having a large following worldwide, will be treated in your hospital. The executive committee of Anjuman e-Haideri, Jor Bagh, New Delhi, by the direction of our chief patron, Maulana Kalbe Jawad Naqvi, has decided unanimously to bear all the medical costs incurred in India for his treatment, so kindly consider our request, do the needful and oblige.”
