Ayatollah Sistani’s Fatwa on Girls Circumcision

The Shia Grand Marja, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Sistani answered a question about girls’ circumcision.

Question: Is girls’ circumcision Wajib (Obligatory) or just Mostahab and tradition (recommended)?

The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: If by circumcision it means to cut skin of the private part of the woman (clitoris), this is not religious tradition, rather if it harms the girl, it is Haram. And cutting the private part of the woman (Vagina) or cutting some of it certainly is a crime against daughter and gives no permission to parents to do so.
