The Second Fatimah: The Spiritual Role of Lady Ma’sumah and a Study of Her Ziyarah

It is unlikely that those who lived at the time of Lady Ma’sumah – the daughter of the seventh Twelver Shi’a Imam, Musa al-Kazim – anticipated the effect she would have on tens of millions of people after her passing.

With her shrine located in the city of Qum, Iran, as the centre for seminaries inspired by the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt, she has proven to be a powerful source of spirituality, warmth, energy and love. This book has been published with the hopes of introducing Lady Ma’sumah’s life and historical role, as well as assisting pilgrims in their mental and spiritual preparations when offering their salutations.

Introduction of the Book

It is a great pleasure to present this booklet to our dear readers who may have visited the shrine of Lady Ma’sumah in Qum, Iran or who may be planning to visit it. Although it is not possible for someone like me to understand-let alone introduce- this hidden treasure that God has blessed humanity with, it is hoped that the ideas mentioned in this book will be of assistance to those with a desire to know more about the Lady, and that it will assist pilgrims in their mental and spiritual preparations.

This is a second, updated edition of the first edition, which was published in 2017. It is based on four lectures delivered in the shrine of Lady Ma;sumah: the second on her spiritual position; and the last two were reflections on her Ziyarah. Sister Shahnaze Safieddine transcribed, organized, and edited the lectures. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of the International Institute for Islamic Studies in Qum for organizing and recording the lectures. Last but not least, I would like to express my deep gratitude to God for granting this great mother, guide, teacher, comforter and intercessor of all loves of Ahl al-Bayt, especially the residents of, students of, and visitors to Qum.
