Ijtihad Network Being Wise and Faithful Muslim in the Contemporary World
Two Day International Conference on Shiʿi Studies hosted by Leiden University Shiʿi Studies Initiative, in cooperation with the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter, and sponsored by The Shiʿa Research Institute and the Jaffer Center for Muslim World Studies.
Why Shiʿi Studies?
The humanities and the study of religion and culture are shifting towards more inclusive and plural approaches to epistemology and ontology. And the field of the study of Islam is as vibrant as ever following new monographs that have emerged in the last ten years. Within this context, the breadth of claims upon Islam and indeed the sources and approaches that we take to make sense of this set of beliefs, practices, and experiences needs to be more nuanced and fresh. With this in mind, we are pleased to convene a major conference on the study of Shiʿi Islam that seeks to go beyond binaries and platitudes and engage fresh ideas, approaches, archives, and experiences. It will be the first such academic gathering in a generation building upon the Strasbourg conference of 1968 and following volumes that emerged in its wake, as well as the more recent Institute of Ismaili Studies conference in 2012. The conference seeks to co-create and rethink the field, in Shiʿi studies defined across traditions (Twelver, Ismaili, and Zaydi) and disciplines (history, philosophy, theology, literature, material culture, and anthropology among others), and in the study of Islam. We want to consider not only the state of the field but also suggest new directions and make critical interventions in the nature of theory and method especially through the volume that will emerge after the conference.
