Portugal is located in the far west of Europe and Islam as a religion entered this country in 670 AD (92 Hijri) when Andalusia (today’s Spain) fell into the hands of Muslim warriors headed by Tariq ibn Ziyad. Islam swept through Iberian Peninsula quickly and Muslims built their first mosque in the city of Mertola, a mosque that later turned into a Catholic church.
Portugal’s population is over 10.6 million and it is estimated that at least 40,000 of them are Muslims.
