New Islamic Center Opens in Portugal

Sayyeda Fatima Islamic center has opened its doors in the Portuguese city of Almada in attendance with Portuguese officials and Muslims.

Ayatollah Sayyid Mortadha Kashmiri, the Supreme religious authority of the Shia in Europe also took part in the event.
Portugal is located in the far west of Europe and Islam as a religion entered this country in 670 AD (92 Hijri) when Andalusia (today’s Spain) fell into the hands of Muslim warriors headed by Tariq ibn Ziyad. Islam swept through Iberian Peninsula quickly and Muslims built their first mosque in the city of Mertola, a mosque that later turned into a Catholic church.
Portugal’s population is over 10.6 million and it is estimated that at least 40,000 of them are Muslims.
