Ayatullah Sayyid Mahdi Ibadi, the Friday Congregational Prayers leader of the holy city of Mashhad and a prominent and leading Islamic scholar was born in Khusuf near Birjand city in southern Khurasan in the year 1936.

Education

He completed his higher education in Islamic sciences in the leading Islamic Hawzah Ilmea (Islamic Seminary) of Mashhad, Qum and Najaf and attended the advanced courses in Islamic sciences taught by leading Islamic jurisprudents in these Hawzah Ilmea (Islamic Seminary).
He actively participated in the Islamic Revolution led by Imam Khomeini (R.A.) which ousted the secular monarchy rule in Iran.Responsibilities and Services
After the victory of Islamic Revolution in February 1979, Ayatullah Sayyid Mahdi Ibadi was appointed by Imam Khomeini (R.A.) as his representative in the Sistan & Baluchistan province and the leader of Friday Congregational Prayers of Zahedan city, the administrative capital city of Sistan & Baluchistan province.
During his tenure as the leader of Friday Congregational Prayers of Zahedan city for a period of fourteen years, he established many public welfare works like the Rasool al-Akram (S.A.W.) General Hospital in the poor locality of Zahedan city. He founded the Imam Sadiq (A.S.) Hawzah Ilmea (Islamic Seminary) in Zahedan. He constructed a vast prayer area covering 22 hectares of land for the performance of Friday and Idd prayers. He also renovated and expanded the Jameh Mosque in the Zahedan city.During the eight years long (1980-1988) imposed war against Islamic Revolution in Iran started and managed by all the anti-Islamic powers in the world to defeat the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Ayatullah Sayyid Mahdi Ibadi many times visited the war fronts and rendered necessary services to the Islamic Mujahideen (combatants). His two sons aged 18 and 20 years participated in the eight years long (1980-1988) imposed war and both attained martyrdom at the war fronts in the sacred cause of Islam.
In the year 1993, the Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution, Ayatullah al-Uzma Sayyid Ali Khamenei appointed Ayatullah Sayyid Mahdi Ibadi as the leader of the Friday Congregational Prayers in the holy city of Mashhad. He was an eloquent orator and during his Friday Congregational Prayers sermons he used to highlight the problems and issues faced by the people in the holy city of Mashhad. He used to lead the Friday Congregational Prayers of Mashhad city in the historical Gawharshad Mosque in the holy shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.), which was always attended by great number of residents of the Mashhad city as well as the pilgrims of the holy shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.).
He enjoyed great popular support and was elected consecutively for three times to Majlis-i Khubregan (the Assembly of Expert Islamic Jurisprudents) by the public.Demise
On 12th February 2005, he met a road accident in Khurasan province and was severely injured. He died due to heart failure on Saturday 26th February 2005 in the holy city of Mashhad.
On Sunday 27th February 2005 hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life in the holy city of Mashhad attended his funeral procession from his residence till the holy shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.).This event is being considered as historical and unprecedented funeral procession in the holy city of Mashhad. According to his last will he was laid to rest in the Behest-i Reza cemetery in the holy city of Mashhad.
