New Zealand Publishes “Halal Food Guide”

Muslims traveling to New Zealand will have less to worry about as the country’s tourism board has released a halal food guide.

Curated by Kiwi Muslim Directory and the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ), the guide consists of general information about New Zealand, halal outlets that have been certified by FIANZ, halal outlets that are owned by Muslims and places to enjoy vegetarian dishes. The list itself is divided into bakeries/snack foods, meat stores/grocery stores and restaurants/takeaway.

New Zealand foods are more than just fish and chips. For instance, in the country’s largest city Auckland, travelers can expect to try Indian cuisine and a wide selection of kebabs. Meanwhile, ‘The Garden City’ Christchurch is home to Middle Eastern and vegetarian Chinese foods.

“The purpose of this guide is to give memorable experiences to Muslim travelers who visit New Zealand and to ensure that they will get the best experience in enjoying high quality foods in this country,” said Tourism New Zealand regional manager for South and Southeast Asia, Steven Dixon, in a press release on Thursday.

“The halal food guide is more to give certainty for Muslim travelers,” said FIANZ president Hazim Arafeh, adding that the guide also provided a credible source for Muslim tourists and businessman who are traveling in the country.
