Job Opening: Assistant Professor in Islamicate South Asian Studies

The Department of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies at Columbia University is seeking to fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in South Asian studies with specialization in Islamicate cultures.

Applications from scholars working in Urdu and a second South Asian language are especially welcome. As a transregional and interdisciplinary department MESAAS seeks applicants capable of bringing their work and interests into conversation with non-specialists both within the department and across the university. The successful candidate will be expected to sustain an active research and publication agenda, to teach both broad courses for undergraduates as well as graduate seminars, and to direct MA and PhD theses. MESAAS encourages applications from candidates whose research, teaching, and service to the field will contribute to the diversity of the department and the university.

The appointment will begin on July 1, 2020. The review of applications will begin January 1, 2020; the position will remain open until filled. On-campus interviews will take place in early spring. The Ph.D. must be in hand by the appointment start date.

Special Instructions to the Applicant

All applications must be made through Columbia University’s Recruitment of Academic Personnel System (RAPS). Please upload the following required materials into RAPS:

Before uploading documents, applicants first will be asked to input a name and valid email address for each reference provider. The application to this position must include a minimum of three reference letters. The applicant may enable RAPS to generate an automatic email to the reference provider, politely requesting a letter of reference and offering a secure link to the RAPS website where a letter can be uploaded quickly and easily. Wherever possible, letters should be uploaded into the online system. After completing the “Provide References” screens, the applicant will come to the “Attach Documents” screen and be asked to upload into RAPS the required application materials listed above. The completion of the application process in RAPS is indicated by a confirmation number, which the applicant should retain.
