Islam will be taught as part of Spanish schools’ official curriculum beginning the 2018 academic year, Levante newspaper reported.
Spain’s education ministry has announced that it will be implemented started from the next school year.
Students will learn about Islam’s core beliefs and Islamic values such as equality, peaceful coexistence, patience, dialogue and moderation.
This decision was taken in accordance to the constant rising numbers of Muslim students; now amounting to about 6.6 percent.
According to Levante, this decision was supposed to be applied 25 years ago per the cooperation agreement signed between Spain and the Islamic institutions in the country, yet it was not implemented until today.
It was reported that Muslim students’ numbers increased in several provinces within Spain including Andalusia, Aragon, Canary Islands and the Basque.
The Islamic institutions in Spain shortly issued a statement thanking the government for its decision; especially after many doubted the country’s intentions of implementing the decision.
