Bahrainis Protests in Support of Sheikh Isa Qassim

New protests have been held in Bahrain against the ruling monarchy’s oppressive policies, especially its ill-treatment of a prominent Shia cleric, Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim.

Protests were held in the village of Sanabis on the outskirts of the capital, Manama, in the capital’s Abu Sabi’ neighborhood, the Maqsha’ District, which lies nine kilometers from the city, the northwestern village of Diraz, and the eastern village of Ma’ameer, early on Saturday, Bahrain’s Lualua television network reported.

The protests were held under the banner of “the Rage of the Revolution.”

Regime forces attacked the protesters in Diraz and Abu Sabi’.

Four people had been arrested by the regime during similar rallies on Friday, when people took to the streets following Friday prayers.

Back in June, Sheikh Isa Qassem, a revered Shia cleric, faced potential expulsion from Bahrain after authorities revoked his citizenship, accusing him of “illegal fund collections, money laundering and helping terrorism.” He has strongly rejected all the allegations.

Sheikh Qassem has been under house arrest for around 500 days.

United Nations Spokesman Stephane Dujarric demanded on Thursday that Sheikh Qassem, whose health has gravely deteriorated in detention, be released. He also asked for immediate medical attention for the cleric.
