Amid the United States’ threats against the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Iraq’s top Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Sistani warned against the dire consequences of such threats and also strongly condemned the ongoing Israeli aggression on Iran.
Iraq’s prominent Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Sistani has strongly condemned Israel’s continued military aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and warned against threats of targeting Iranian authorities.
In a statement issued by his office on Thursday, which was carried by Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen news network, Ayatollah Sistani also strongly condemned threats against Iran’s “senior religious and political leaders,” warning that any such “criminal action” will be a clear violation of religious and moral rules as well as international law.
Such action will also lead to dire consequences for the entire region, where things could spiral out of control, increasing the suffering of the regional nations and endangering their interests, the statement read.
The top Iraqi cleric called on influential international institutions and countries, especially Islamic countries, to make utmost effort to stop “this cruel war” and find a peaceful and fair resolution to Iran’s nuclear issue, based on international law.
Israel attacked Iran, including residential buildings in Tehran, in an unprovoked act of aggression overnight on June 13. Top Iranian military officials and several nuclear scientists were assassinated in targeted strikes, and civilians lost their lives when houses were struck directly.
Iran has responded powerfully, striking key targets in Tel Aviv and Haifa, among others.
Amid a strong response by Iran, the United States has sought to increase pressure on the Islamic Republic, with President Donald Trump threatening that Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, may be targeted.
