Ayatollah Qāḍī and the Importance of Good Intentions

Ayatollah Sayyid ʿAlī Qāḍī Ṭabāṭabā’ī, a towering figure in Islamic mysticism, often emphasised the power of niyyah (intention) in determining the success of a believer’s deeds. One of the stories from his life beautifully illustrates this principle.

A young student once approached Ayatollah Qāḍī, expressing his frustration over the lack of spiritual progress despite his rigorous worship and studies. The student lamented that he felt no closer to Allah (SWT) than when he first began his journey.

Ayatollah Qāḍī listened carefully and asked him,
“Why do you seek closeness to Allah?”

The student paused, surprised by the question. After some thought, he admitted that his intention was to achieve a sense of inner peace and spiritual status. Ayatollah Qāḍī smiled gently and said:
“The problem lies in your intention. Purify it. Do everything solely for the pleasure of Allah, and you will find your path opened before you.”

He continued to explain that the acceptance and impact of deeds depend on their sincerity. Even the smallest act performed with a pure intention for Allah’s pleasure holds immense value in His eyes, while grand actions devoid of sincerity remain hollow.

Taking his teacher’s advice to heart, the student renewed his efforts with a clear and selfless niyyah. Over time, he experienced a profound spiritual transformation, feeling a closeness to Allah he had never known before.

This story reflects Ayatollah Qāḍī’s deep understanding of the human heart and the essence of true worship. It serves as a reminder that sincerity and the desire to please Allah are the cornerstones of spiritual growth. His teachings continue to inspire believers to purify their intentions in all aspects of life.
