Worldwide Rituals Held to Mark Ashura

Ashura, the 10th day of the lunar month of Muharram, marks the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HF).

One of the philosophy of Imam Hussain uprising is to Commanding Good and Forbidding Evil – a must for every Muslim, during the Abbasid caliph Yazid son of Muawia an unjust ruler who was doing evil in the name of Islam.

On Ashura, millions of Shiites and Sunnis all over the globe, dressed in black, take to the streets and mosques, to mourn the tragic martyrdom of Imam Hussein in 680 AD.

The annual mourning commemoration is held in different regions of the world with various traditional rituals.

No matter where they live, in the heart of a US metropolis or an outlying region in Australia, Muslims perform annual mourning rituals to pay tribute to Imam Hussain (AS), known as the king of martyrs in Islam (sayyed u-Shohada).
